Review for My Afternoons With

A middle aged, hulking handyman named Germain (Gerard Depardieu)
meets a charming, 85 lb 95 year old lady named Margueritte (Gisele
Casadesus) who rekindles his interest in books and pigeons. The two
often sit together in the park, counting the 19 pigeons that are
always there (and naming them) and reading books. The movie also
touches on the lives of some other people who are close to Germain,
such as his aging mother and an unrelated woman who throws her
boyfriend out of her house at the point of a pitchfork, drawing
blood in the process. The movie is in French with English subtitles.
Four stars.
The movie is iffy because it has 15 mildly violent scenes in
it. These include: A man kicks a door in frustration, there is
a story about a beheadding, a man threatens to commit suicide with a
gun, there is a scene showing piles of dead and dieing rats, two
people fight over some mail, a woman threatens to slap a kid, there
is a story of an earthquake on tv, a man slaps a kid, and he slaps a
woman, a woman stabs a man with a pitchfork, there is a story about
a woman choking to death, a man threatens to start a fight, there is
a man hunting a tiger, a son and his mother are arguing and there is
a dead body.
The previews include: a nonviolent commercial and nonviolent
previews for The Descendants, A Dangerous Method and Into The Abyss.
