Review for Gainsbourg: A Heroic
Life NR Drama/Musical 2:10

Gainsbourg is a movie in French with English subtitles with a
vaugely Holloween theme released in July, but arriving in San Jose
just in time for the big holiday. It is supposedly a biography
of one man's life as an artist, starting from when he was a young
boy. The Holloween theme comes through with two costumed characters
that trail the star of the film. One is a Mr Potatohead type
and the other is an evil nemisis of the main character, complete
with big nose, big ears and long fingers. The movie must have been
entirely financed by a cigarette company, considering that nearly
every scene is filled to the brim with cigarette smoke. Even
12 year old kids are seen smoking. Even more questionable is
that in one point in the dialogue a grown woman is making sexual
overtures to a 12 year old boy. The film is not rated, but is
not for kids as there is some nudity, including one shot of a man's
penis. One star.
The movie is iffy because it has a total of 17 scenes of mild
violence. These include: A kid playing with a toy gun while
saying "blood, blood everywhere", a kid points the toy gun at Mr
Potatohead, there is a cartoon of a man's head exploding, there is a
song about killing someone, a woman propositions an underage boy for
a kiss, a man smashes a painting, the evil nemisis character
(puppet) sets himself and the room on fire, a man pulls out a real
gun, a man brandishes a gun, there is a song about a woman
committing suicide, a man dies in his sleep, a man fires a gun at a
dummy, there is a song about a war, a man tries to attack a singer
and the song about the war is sung a second time.
The previews include: two nonviolent commercials, and nonviolent
previews for Orange and Sunshine, The Conquest, Young Goethe In Love
and Melancholia.
