Hipsters is a story about people in the 1950's era Soviet Union who
try to imitate what they think American pop culture looks
like. The so called Hipsters dress in fancy clothes and style
their hair to resemble American pop stars such as Elvis. They also
like to dance and party like it is 1999, even though they live in
1955. Gangs of conformist Communist Party faithful run around
and harass the Hipsters in "raids" where they chase them around and
cut off their long hair to try to get them to conform to standard
Communist Party expectations. The movie takes some breaks
during the action to introduce musical numbers, mostly Jazz and
Saxophone type music, creating a musical atmosphere that rivals that
of the movie Joyful Noise. A word of caution for parents: This movie
is not rated, but there are some portraits (ie pictographs in books)
shown that graphically depict heterosexual sex acts and there is
some brief live action nudity. The movie appears to be in Russian
with English subtitles. Four stars.
Hipsters ranks as a nonviolent movie because it has only ten scenes
that can be characterized as being violent. These scenes
include: a woman fakes spraining her ankle while running, a woman
pushes a man into a lake, there is a brief battle scene from a war,
a woman angrily chases her daughter through her apartment, two men
square off for a fight, but don't fight, a man relates stories of
people being arrested and sent to prison camps for trivial stuff,
there is a story about confronting an armed robber, a woman throws
stuff at a man, there is a nonviolent "raid" by the Communist Party
thought police and the KGB arrests two people.
There were no previews for this movie when it was shown at the
