What Is Peacemovies.com?

by John Thielking
9-22-12

9-22-12 Update:  Someone keeps knocking over the one newsrack that I have set up in downtown San Jose (at 2nd and San Carlos in front of Camera 3). A good samaritan always seems to be handy to set it upright again by the time I see it. This has gotten me thinking that I should offer a subscription to the newsletter in addition to having newsracks that just may not last.  So if you like the reviews of the movies on this site and like the commentaries taken from the monthly newsletters between the asterisks (****) as shown below, then I can send you or a person of your choice the same material in the form of a paper and ink version of the 6-8 page 8.5"x 11" newsletter once per month for a cost of $27 per year.  Just make out your check or money order to "John Thielking" and send it to Peacemovies.com, 5669 Snell Avenue #173, San Jose, CA 95123 USA.  It is best to send a personal check as I have had mail get lost before.  Orders will be accepted only for customers in the USA for now. Thanks.   PS An additional benefit of subscribing to the paper and ink version of the newsletter is that all of the recommendations and reviews for DVD's for that month are printed in the newsletter, so you get that information before it appears on the web site. (The DVD info on the web site is updated once per week, sometimes not until Thursday of each week.)  Also, the paper and ink newsletter has a list of the more violent movies released to theaters for the entire month, up to 3 weeks in advance of the info that appears on the web site.  Unlike newsletters that get sent out at a lower cost per issue and arrive 2-3 weeks late, this one will be sent via 1st class mail, to be sure it arrives no later than the 7th of each month, so that the info is still timely.

9-13-12 Update:  Three US Embassies in the Middle East (Yemen, Libya and Egypt) have been attacked after riots were instigated in response to the blasphemous anti-Islamic movie titled "Innocence Of Muslims", which violated tenants of the Muslim faith in two ways: It depicts Mohammed in a work of art and it criticizes Mohammed in an unflattering way.  So far 6 people have died as the result of the violence (4 Americans and 2 Arabs).  Peacemovies.com condemns the violence, while also condemning the making of the movie, apparently by a man named Sam Bacile and promoted by the infamous people named Terry Jones and Morris Sadek.  If you want to see the clip of the movie that is causing so much controversy, search for the Twitter account of Morris Sadek and look for the links to the Youtube videos in the tweets displayed there.  A couple of factors are fueling the controversy on both sides.  First, the Middle East is already simmering with anti-American sentiment due to American foreign policy of drone strikes and the war on terror.  Secondly, Sam Bacile has stated that he plans to produce a total of 200 hours of additional anti-Islamic material, which I consider to be just over the top, considering how much controversy he has generated with just 15 minutes of his work so far.  I think we should be satisfied with parodies such as movies like The Dictator, which depicts Middle Eastern leaders in an unflattering light, and we should leave the topic of Mohammed well enough alone.   That is all for now.  Thanks for reading.

7-25-12 update: Please make a donation to ANSWER-Los Angeles after their offices were ransacked and robbed after ANSWER-LA supported protests against the reckless police shootings of two unarmed suspects in Anaheim, CA over last weekend.  The latest victim was allegedly already handcuffed when he was shot.  Go here for more information and to make a donation. Thanks!

Pop quiz:  Click on "yes" or "no" to answer the question.  In January 2013, would you buy a 100 page 5.5" x 8.5" booklet titled "Peacemovies.com 2012" that was printed in 9pt font so that it has the same text as a 170 page book printed in the more common 11 pt font, if the price were $7 per copy?  The book would contain reviews of all of the nonviolent movies that were in theaters during 2012, plus the commentaries from all 12 Peacemovies.com monthly newsletters from 2012.

2nd Pop Quiz Question:  When you watch a movie, what kind of movie do you prefer to watch?  violent  nonviolent  don't care

September 2012
Vol. 1 No. 9

Newsflash: The Green Party of Santa Clara County has just now passed a resolution calling for peaceful negotiations to resolve the crises with Iran and Syria. See below:

Resolution Of The Santa Clara County, CA USA Green Party To Oppose Military Intervention In Iran Or Syria

We also urge the government and opposition forces in Syria to enter into serious negotiations to achieve a diplomatic settlement of the conflict there and that the US government, NATO and their allies fully support such negotiations instead of directly or indirectly supporting regime change through a violent proxy war or other violent means while undermining efforts to negotiate a settlement.

We also urge the US/UN to lift the sanctions on Iran and allow Iran to continue their nuclear program without outside interference while continuing to work through peaceful negotiations (not coercive negotiations, threats or military action) for the worldwide abolition of nuclear weapons and for the ultimate goal of dismantling all nuclear power plants and nuclear material production facilities worldwide.

Whereas there has rarely been a successful occupation/liberation by military force that promptly resulted in a stable democracy being formed in a formerly occupied country AND;

Whereas the US and NATO have an established track record of using depleted Uranium in Kosovo, Iraq, Afghanistan and probably also in Libya AND;

Whereas the use of depleted Uranium has longer lasting effects than any use of biological or chemical weapons while the use of all three devices are themselves war crimes AND;

Whereas the people and established governments of Iran and Syria have the right to self determination without outside interference;

Hereby be it resolved that we, the Santa Clara County Green Party, of California USA, demand that the US, NATO and allied forces should not intervene militarily in either Iran or Syria, nor should either side continue to supply arms in attempts to foment proxy wars and/or regime changes through violent conflict.

Resolution proposed on August 23, 2012

Special Announcement: A Foreclosure Summit is happening Saturday, Sept 15, 2012, 1-4PM at New Community Of Faith, 6350 Rainbow Drive, San Jose, CA 95129. The Peacemovies.com web site is dedicated to bringing you important news updates such as this, in addition to providing you with the latest movie reviews so you can figure out which movies are the least violent that are being shown in the theaters and that are newly released to DVD. See below for more details about movies:

**************************************************************************************

We live in tumultuous times. First Obama signed ACTA back in October 2011 that would usher in a new era of repression for the Internet. Then Obama signed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) on December 31, 2011, authorizing the indefinite detention of US citizens without charge or trial if they are deemed to be terrorism suspects. Next up is a bill that would strip US citizenship from people who are detained as terrorism suspects and a bill that will outlaw protesting of any kind inside the security perimeter of a venue that is secured by the Secret Service. Plus Attorney General Eric Holder said regarding indefinite detention and extrajudicial executions, “Due process does not include judicial process.” and “The term 'assassination' only includes unlawful killings.” Where will all it end? All we can do is protest at every opportunity and work to raise a generation of folks who will consider freedom of expression and freedom from militarism as core principles to carry forward. To that end, Peacemovies.com seeks to use what is left of the free market to persuade the people who make movies to make more movies that are relatively nonviolent. On Peacemovies.com, movies are categorized into 4 classes: little to no violence, nonviolent, iffy and too violent. About 35%-50% of the movies currently in the theaters are relatively nonviolent. In the tables below, DVDs are rated and reviewed and then the movies currently in theaters are rated and reviewed. Thank you for your support.

Peacemovies.com also offers reviews of older nonviolent movies on DVD.  To see reviews of the top 50 older movies on DVD, click here, or visit the page below to check out the latest non-violent movies and family movies on DVD and in theaters. The complete reviews of everything on newly released DVDs and in theaters from Little Or No Violence up to Iffy are available by clicking the links in the tables below.  Concerned about your privacy while surfing Peacemovies.com?  Not to worry, your information is safe with Peacemovies.com.  Check out the privacy policy here.

New!  The Peacemovies.com homepage has been reorganized to reflect the priorities of the majority of viewers.  Since a survey shows that 80% of you watch DVDs (and 90% of DVD viewers watch new releases), but only 45% of you watch movies in theaters, a brand new list has been created showing new releases to DVD in the past 60-90 days towards the top of the homepage, followed by the regular list of movies currently in theaters. At the very bottom of the homepage are links to archived versions of the homepage, showing past lists of movies in theaters and past lists of movies on DVD.  The entire site is also searchable using the Google search box in the upper left hand corner of the homepage.  Thank you.

New! Instances where movies feature people smoking are now included in the reviews of some of the nonviolent movies that are reviewed. (Movie reviews after 5-14-12 include this information.)  It has been documented that kids smoke more often if they first watch movies that feature smoking.

Pop quiz:  Click on "yes" or "no" to answer the question.  In January 2013, would you buy a 32 page 11"x14" tabloid newspaper titled "Peacemovies.com 2012" that was printed in 9pt font so that it has the same text as a 170 page 8.5"x 5.5" book printed in the more common 11 pt font, if the price were $3 per copy?  The tabloid would contain reviews of all of the nonviolent movies that were in theaters during 2012, plus the commentaries from all 12 Peacemovies.com monthly newsletters from 2012.
 Yes  No

2nd Pop Quiz Question: Would you buy used DVD's from a brick and mortar store in your neighborhood (ie no shipping) that were 3 months to 3 years old for $7 each if you could also sell them back to the same store for $3 each when you were done watching them? The store would be called Peacemovies.com and would only sell used DVDs of movies that have little or no violence, are nonviolent or rank as "Iffy". Note that Amazon.com often gives only $1.50 to $5.00 gift cards for DVD trade-ins depending on how old the DVD release date is (a year old DVD might have a trade in value of $3.00)  and you have to pay shipping to get the DVDs turned in to Amazon.com. The lowest price for a used DVD on Amazon.com is $5, including shipping. Answer:  Yes  No

Dear Readers:

Note: The long term future of Peacemovies.com is uncertain.  I just today (6-13-12) determined that Google Adsense ads have been disabled for the site. I don't know why this happened, but looking at the Adsense help section several possibilities come to mind, including an arbitrary suspension for violating a silly little rule or another such as not providing a land line phone and valid address so I can get a PIN, or possibly I posted some offensive content. So, I am using this space to pitch for donations. I will not use Paypal or Visa/MC for donations as those avenues could be terminated for content complaints, as happened to Wikileaks.  So if you want to send a donation, please send only a personal check* payable to John Thielking to the street address above. (I may get a DBA bank account soon, but this is not set up yet.)  The donations are not and will not be tax deductible as I do not plan to restrict my political advocacy in exchange for a tax break. I do plan on only asking for donations and selling the newsletter at news racks for $1 per copy and will not likely convert any portion of the site into a paid subscription site.  This way the site can continue to be accessed by the most number of readers with the widest variety of web surfing tools possible, including, in the case of the paper and ink newsletter, people with no web surfing tools at all.

I have also done some preliminary research on the idea of publishing a book version of the monthly paper and ink newsletters. After reviewing the unacceptable terms and conditions for self publishing through Amazon.com or lulu.com (various restrictions on publishing "offensive" content, plus prohibitions on using celebrity names -- such as Medea Benjamin?-- without permission and prohibitions on using URL's that might be considered as linking to sites that are too commercial  --- such as Peacemovies.com?) I have decided to make my first book --- "Peacemovies.com 2012" available for "free" as a pdf, only downloadable from the Peacemovies.com web site.  Pdf's are compatible with the latest versions of the Kindle and can also be read using the free Adobe Acrobat Reader on your PC.  All that I ask is that if you find yourself in possession of my e-book that you send $5 to the address above (personal check made out to John Thielking). Look for this first e-book to appear in January 2013.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

John Thielking

* I ask for only a personal check because my mail has been intercepted on three separate occasions and in those cases it never reached its final destination. So if you send a money order or international check, the funds may be drawn from your account, but may never reach Peacemovies.com. A personal check is better to send because if I never get the check, the funds stay in your account. If you do send me a donation, please also send me an e-mail at pagesincolor@yahoo.com so I can document any cases of lost/intercepted mail.  Thanks.
