Good news! ACTA (the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement) has been rejected by the EU Parliament by a vote of 478 against and 39 in favor. (July 4, 2012 www.rt.com) This was after ACTA received negative recommendations from 5 out of 5 subcommittees in the EU parliament. ACTA still has not been ratified by any of the countries that signed it. It requires ratification by at least 6 countries in order for it to go into effect. Australia is considering postponing a vote on ratification until at least the end of 2013 (www.cnet.com.au).
Now for the bad news. The Trans Pacific Partnership trade agreement is being negotiated in secret in San Diego, CA, USA this week. Many of the details of this agreement are still secret. What we do know is disturbing. The agreement would among other intellectual property rights expansions lengthen the time that patents on drugs are good for, cutting off the supplies of lower cost generic drugs to people in the countries that ratify the treaty. It would also criminalize the making of temporary copies of copyrighted works (such as VCR tapes and DVR's?) and would criminalize fair use. (May 12, 2012 www.rt.com)
In other news, Japan is set to restart its unsafe nuclear reactors this month, despite hundreds of thousands of Japanese taking to the streets to protest against restarting any of the nuclear reactors following the worst ever nuclear reactor accident at Fukushima. (July 1, 2012 www.rt.com). There is a screening of the movie “Fukushima Never Again” with Chieko Shiina, visiting from Japan, scheduled for July 12, 2012 at 7pm, Technology Building Auditorium, 4th floor, 2100 Moorpark Ave, San Jose CA (San Jose City College campus).
The Peacemovies.com newsletter is published once per month in paper and ink form and is updated online multiple times per week. The paper version of the newsletter is available at a news rack in front of Camera 3 at the corner of 2nd and San Carlos, San Jose, CA, USA for $1 per copy. A limited number of free copies of the newsletter are available at the San Jose Peace Center, 48 S. 7th St., San Jose, CA between the hours of 4PM and 7PM Monday through Friday. The free flier version of the newsletter is also distributed by the Green Party of Santa Clara County at various events in the San Jose area.
Peacemovies.com seeks to take advantage of the fact that a marketing survey done at the beginning of the project indicates that ½ of the people surveyed want to watch a nonviolent movie, the other ½ don't care one way or the other, and less than 10% want to watch a violent movie and/or list a violent theme such as horror movies as their favorite. So, to improve the odds that people who want to watch a nonviolent movie will succeed in watching a movie that is relatively nonviolent, Peacemovies.com was set up to rate and review movies based on how much violence is in each movie. The movies that get reviewed on Peacemovies.com are categorized into 3 categories: Little Or No Violence, Nonviolent and Iffy. A 4th category, Too Violent, features movie titles that are listed, but not reviewed.

Dear Readers:
Note: The long term future of
Peacemovies.com is uncertain. I just today (6-13-12)
determined that Google Adsense ads have been disabled for the
site. I don't know why this happened, but looking at the Adsense
help section several possibilities come to mind, including an
arbitrary suspension for violating a silly little rule or
another such as not providing a land line phone and valid
address so I can get a PIN, or possibly I posted some offensive
content. So, I am using this space to pitch for donations. I
will not use Paypal or Visa/MC for donations as those avenues
could be terminated for content complaints, as happened to
Wikileaks. So if you want to send a donation, please send
only a personal check* payable to John Thielking to the street
address above. (I may get a DBA bank account soon, but this is
not set up yet.) The donations are not and will not be tax
deductible as I do not plan to restrict my political advocacy in
exchange for a tax break. I do plan on only asking for donations
and selling the newsletter at news racks for $1 per copy and
will not likely convert any portion of the site into a paid
subscription site. This way the site can continue to be
accessed by the most number of readers with the widest variety
of web surfing tools possible, including, in the case of the
paper and ink newsletter, people with no web surfing tools at
all.
I have also done some preliminary
research on the idea of publishing a book version of the monthly
paper and ink newsletters. After reviewing the unacceptable
terms and conditions for self publishing through Amazon.com or
lulu.com (various restrictions on publishing "offensive"
content, plus prohibitions on using celebrity names -- such as
Medea Benjamin?-- without permission and prohibitions on using
URL's that might be considered as linking to sites that are too
commercial --- such as Peacemovies.com?) I have decided to
make my first book --- "Peacemovies.com 2012" available for
"free" as a pdf, only downloadable from the Peacemovies.com web
site. Pdf's are compatible with the latest versions of the
Kindle and can also be read using the free Adobe Acrobat Reader
on your PC. All that I ask is that if you find yourself in
possession of my e-book that you send $5 to the address above
(personal check made out to John Thielking). Look for this first
e-book to appear in January 2013.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
John Thielking
* I ask for only a personal check
because my mail has been intercepted on three separate occasions
and in those cases it never reached its final destination. So if
you send a money order or international check, the funds may be
drawn from your account, but may never reach Peacemovies.com. A
personal check is better to send because if I never get the
check, the funds stay in your account. If you do send me a
donation, please also send me an e-mail at
pagesincolor@yahoo.com so I can document any cases of
lost/intercepted mail. Thanks.
