What Is Peacemovies.com?

by John Thielking

Peacemovies.com is an activist web site that starts viewers off with a political peace and justice editorial or two followed by violence ratings of movies available on DVD and in theaters. Hyperlinks from the list of movie ratings take viewers to the reviews of the relatively nonviolent movies. The "Too Violent" movies are listed but not reviewed. The movies are classified into four categories: Little Or No Violence (2 or less violent scenes per 90 minutes and/or a few off screen violent stories and few deaths, if any), Nonviolent (10 or less serious acts of violence per 90 minutes with few if any deaths), Iffy (10-20 scenes of mild violence per 90 minutes) and Too Violent (way more than 10 violent scenes or more than 10 seriously violent scenes per 90 minutes and/or many dead bodies and/or an orgy of violence -- a sustained violent scene of 30 seconds or so or longer --- at any point).

Rave Reviews Of Peacemovies.com, the Peacemovies.com Newsletter and the Peacemovies.com Booklets:

I have reviewed the Peacemovies. com site and find it to be an excellent resource for detailed information as it pertains to nonviolent content. As the movement to reduce youth violence in movies and video games grows, this site can be very useful in establishing standards and ethics for both families and those affected by illnesses that would be very deemed detrimental to a violent movie experience. I applaud this site for its contribution and wish content creators and rating systems would look past advertiser sponsorship and utilize this vehicle.

Peacemovies are an invaluable tool for use in raising kids and grandchildren. There is so much gratuitous violence bombarding our children today, from video games to news programs, that it is difficult even to have a discussion with youngsters about why you won't take them to a particular movie. When the child whines, "But everybody is seeing it." you can point to the Peacemovies sheet and say, "No, everybody isn't. People who care about what influences their kids are not seeing it or taking their kids to see it. And I care."

It's a rare treasure to find a movie review guide that incorporates a healthy dose of progressive wisdom as well. Thank you John for the unique treat!

7-14-2013 Update:

In case you haven't heard, George Zimmerman, the white, Latin American man accused of murdering the African American teenager Trayvon Martin was acquitted of all charges on Saturday, July 13, 2013. Nationwide protests are occurring against this verdict made by 5 white women and one Latina woman as this is being written. Tonight there was a protest and march through downtown San Jose, CA, USA, attended by up to 100 people. The march went from San Jose City Hall at 4th and E Santa Clara Streets over to the Federal Building at 2nd and San Carlos and took to the center of the roadways on 2nd and 1st streets until the cops forced people to walk on the sidewalk. Another march and rally is planned for next Sunday, July 21st at 6PM starting at San Jose City Hall. Charlotte Casey of the San Jose Peace and Justice Center has also suggested that people show up at San Jose City Hall EVERY DAY until the Obama Justice Dept files civil rights violation charges against George Zimmerman. This author can't go every day, but he will check back on Wednesday to see what is happening. People on KPFA.org tonight suggested that everyone needs to to something in their own way to end violence and racism. Working on Peacemovies.com is what this author is doing to end that, so this Monday and Tuesday will be spent watching movies as this weekend has been full of protest actions but not much movie watching.

7-25-2013 Update: (edited 8-6-2013)

The protest for Trayvon Martin on Sunday July 21st went off without a hitch. People marched down the center of Santa Clara Street to Market st and then down Market St to the Federal Building at 2nd and San Carlos. Shown on the channel 2 (KTVU) news was a scene where one person (backed up by the rest of the group) was blocking the path of a light rail vehicle. Apparently, no arrests occurred. The next protest action will occur on August 6th and August 24th in San Jose. For information on the August 6th protest, visit https://www.facebook.com/events/121103384726684/.

7-31-2013 Update: (Edited 8-6-2013)

Paul Short has a anti-GMO products boycott list (see the July 4, 2013 Peacemovies.com homepage and the June 2013 newsletter) that includes Marie Callenders (the tv dinners I suppose). I am now officially taking Marie Callenders the restaurant off of the anti-GMO boycott list because of the following observations: 1) Last Sunday the chef who was cooking the omelets during brunch used olive oil instead of the (probably soy oil) that he used the previous week and 2) after inquiring about how they cook the Prime Rib dinner for Fri and Sat dinner service I found out that a) the meat is cooked in the oven without any oil and b) the vegetables are steamed (not deep fried or stir fried with oil as they are at some places). Please encourage Marie Callenders to expand their GMO free menu offerings. 8-6-2013 Update: Marie Callenders has three other menu items that are GMO free: their oven roasted turkey, their oven roasted tri-tip and BBQ ribs offered with their backyard BBQ specials. Also, some of their pies are GMO free. The pumpkin pie is one example of a pie that does not have any corn or soy products in it. The whipped cream has corn syrup in it though. So I opted for taking a whole pumpkin pie home and paired it with Truwhip from Whole Foods which is a 70% Organic, GMO free version of frozen Cool Whip.

**************************************************************************************

We live in tumultuous times. First Obama signed ACTA back in October 2011 that would usher in a new era of repression for the Internet. Then Obama signed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) on December 31, 2011, authorizing the indefinite detention of US citizens without charge or trial if they are deemed to be terrorism suspects. Next up is a bill that would strip US citizenship from people who are detained as terrorism suspects and a bill that will outlaw protesting of any kind inside the security perimeter of a venue that is secured by the Secret Service. Plus Attorney General Eric Holder said regarding indefinite detention and extrajudicial executions, “Due process does not include judicial process.” and “The term 'assassination' only includes unlawful killings.” Where will all it end? All we can do is protest at every opportunity and work to raise a generation of folks who will consider freedom of expression and freedom from militarism as core principles to carry forward. To that end, Peacemovies.com seeks to use what is left of the free market to persuade the people who make movies to make more movies that are relatively nonviolent. On Peacemovies.com, movies are categorized into 4 classes: little or no violence, nonviolent, iffy and too violent. About 35%-50% of the movies currently in the theaters are relatively nonviolent. In the tables below, DVDs are rated and reviewed and then the movies currently in theaters are rated and reviewed. Thank you for your support.

Peacemovies.com also offers reviews of older nonviolent movies on DVD.  To see reviews of the top 50 older movies on DVD, click here, or visit the page below to check out the latest non-violent movies and family movies on DVD and in theaters. The complete reviews of everything on newly released DVDs and in theaters from Little Or No Violence up to Iffy are available by clicking the links in the tables below.  Concerned about your privacy while surfing Peacemovies.com?  Not to worry, your information is safe with Peacemovies.com.  Check out the privacy policy here.

New!  The Peacemovies.com homepage has been reorganized to reflect the priorities of the majority of viewers.  Since a survey shows that 80% of you watch DVDs (and 90% of DVD viewers watch new releases), but only 45% of you watch movies in theaters, a brand new list has been created showing new releases to DVD in the past 60-90 days towards the top of the homepage, followed by the regular list of movies currently in theaters. At the very bottom of the homepage are links to archived versions of the homepage, showing past lists of movies in theaters and past lists of movies on DVD.  The entire site is also searchable using the Google search box in the upper left hand corner of the homepage.  Thank you.

New! Instances where movies feature people smoking are now included in the reviews of some of the nonviolent movies that are reviewed. (Movie reviews after 5-14-12 include this information.)  It has been documented that kids smoke more often if they first watch movies that feature smoking.
