Review for Joyful Noise PG-13

Joyful Noise is a musical about a church choir that is trying to
make the big time by winning the National Joyful Noise
competition. Every year they are beaten by a suspiciously
professional looking choir that may be violating the rules that bar
professionals from competing. The story has some humorous
sidebar love interests including a poor woman who hadn't had sex in
4 years, but when she finally did, her one night stand partner turns
up dead. 3 stars.
The movie is iffy because although it has only nine violent scenes,
two of these are fights of not too serious a nature or long
duration, which pushes the movie up to the iffy category. One
fight is the fight between the Dolly Parton character and the big
black woman portrayed in the previews. It turns out that the
"breaking my hair" complaint, the throwing of food and the Edward
Scissorhands comment are all part of the same fight. It's
pretty tame, but it goes on for awhile. The other fight is
between two potential boyfriends of one of the teenage girls in the
choir. Although it is very brief, it does draw blood from one
of the fighters. The seven other violent scenes include: A man
has a heart attack and dies off screen, a woman pulls out a gun to
deal with a home invasion, a guy hits his head on a tree branch,
there is a story of a man rejoining the army, a man dies in bed,
there is a story of harassment of a black kid and a woman slaps her
daughter.
The previews included: nonviolent previews for Big Miracle and A
Thousand Words, violent previews for Red Tails and Journey 2
Mysterious Island and a somewhat violent preview for The Lucky
One.
