Mao's Last Dancer 2:07  PG  Drama

Chi Cao, Guo Chengwu and Huang Wen Bin play the part of a Chinese ballet dancer in training named Li Cunxin who is taken from his family in rural China at the age of 11 and trained for the ballet at Madame Mao's Beijing Dance Academy in 1973. At the age of 18, Li makes a trip to the US as an honor student ballet dancer and predictably defects when he falls in love with an American dancer named Liz (Amanda Schull). Later on he has a longer running romance with Australian ballerina Mary McKendry (Camilla Vergotis), but this is not portrayed very well in the movie.  This movie has a tear jerker ending that is very well done. 4 stars.

There are six violent scenes in this movie including: A man is shot on stage as part of a play, the Chinese play actors are parading with guns on stage, a man is taken away by the secret police, there is a kung fu fighting movie, Li is forcibly removed (kidnapped) and there is a depiction of a Chinese chain gang where one person is shot in the head (off screen).

The previews include: A violent preview for Mesrine and non-violent previews for A Woman, A Gun And A Noodle Shop, It's Kind Of A Funny Story,  Jack Goes Boating and Never Let Me Go.
