Review for Pearl Jam Twenty, Documentary/Musical, NR  1:49
by  John Thielking
9-26-2011

This documentary chronicles the development of the Grunge Band Pearl Jam over the past 20 years.  We get to see videos of some of their earliest concerts ranging from postage stamp sized venues to the big stages with tens of thousands of people in attendance.  We also get to see the ups and downs of life in the band including at least two suicides and various goings on.  Three stars.

The movie ranks as iffy because there are 12 scenes involving violence, most of which occur off screen.  These include: a story of  a band member overdosing on drugs and dieing, a story of Kurt blowing his head off, a story of a bouncer getting too rough with a customer, a story about a teen killing himself, a singer risks his life jumping from the stage into the crowd, a story of "fights breaking out", a scene showing cartoons in a boxing match, a story of someone trying to drive into a band member's house at 50 mph, a story about how Kurt took his own life, a fake monster attack, a story about 15 people hurt and 9 killed at a concert when people crushed up to the stage and a guitarist smashing his guitar.

There were no previews for this movie when it was shown at the Camera 3 in San Jose, CA.
