Peepli Live 1:44 NR
Comedy/Drama
Natha (Omkar Das), a poor farmer from the town of Peepli in India, is
having his farm foreclosed on by the government because he can not
repay a loan on time. The only government program that can help
his family financially is the program that pays a family $2000 if the
breadwinner commits suicide because of bad debts. It is election time
in India and some of the politicians are running on a platform of "a
chicken in every pot" and "all is well with the farmers in
India". Natha's plight gets exposed by a sensationalist media and soon
the politicians are falling all over themselves either trying to save
Natha, or wishing him dead so that their opposition will lose votes.
This movie is rated iffy because it has 11 scenes of violence or
references to violence, plus constant talk of Natha needing to commit
suicide. Natha's wife hits Natha and his brother and throws them
out of the house, there is talk of various farmers committing suicide,
there is a story of an old man getting hit by a train, there is a story
of a girl jumping into a well and dying, there is a story about
corporal punishment, there is a story about 79 farmers committing
suicide, there is a group of men who are beating each other up, there
is a death threat, the wife hits her son, a man works himself to death
and there is a fire and explosion.
The previews include a violent preview for one movie (missed the title)
a non-violent preview for Anjaana Anjaani and a violent preview for
Dabangg.
