Jim Carrey stars as a cut throat real estate developer named Mr.
Popper who inherits 6 penguins from his deceased father. Comedic
antics ensue when Mr. Popper tries to keep the penguins in his
upscale Manhattan apartment. It's not clear if the "acting"
done by the penguins is from real penguins or if they are just
animations on the screen, but they look realistic enough. The
penguins and Mr Popper proceed to tear up the town and drive his
landlord nuts, while at the same time entertaining his kids
silly. Four stars.
The movie is iffy because there are a total of 13 violent scenes,
including a Hurt Locker pun made by a kid about his sister, someone
trips over a wooden packing crate, someone gets washed away by a
flood, a penguin shouts in someone's face, a penguin slams himself
into a wall, a penguin kicks someone in the shin, someone gets hit
in the head with a ball, penguins skate into people -- bowling them
over, a penguin bites someone, a penguin pecks someone in the leg, a
penguin egg is determined to be not viable, a penguin gets tangled
in fishing line and a man is made to punch himself in the
face.
There were no previews when the movie was shown at the Blue Light
Cinemas in San Jose, CA, though there were some non-violent
commercials before the movie. There was a somewhat violent, mostly
slapstick cartoon shown before the movie called "Scrat's Continental
Crack-Up", about a squirrel who sets off a chain reaction within the
Earth that results in sudden continental drift.
