The Peacemovies.com homepage will be offline from Monday January 16,
2012 at 9AM until Friday Jan 20, 2012 at 5PM to protest against the
pending anti-Internet Piracy legislation pending in the House of
Representatives (SOPA or the Stop Online Piracy Act) and in the
Senate (PIPA/PROTECT IP). During this time the links to movie
reviews of nonviolent movies normally displayed on the homepage will
be inaccessible from the homepage. Going offline for 5 days gives
the customers of Peacemovies.com a taste of what it would be like to
have Peacemovies.com shut down for the minimum length of time that
it takes to complete and then dispute and reverse an enforcement
action under SOPA (5 days). Peacemovies.com is also taking this
action in solidarity with the General Strike being conducted by
Occupy Nigeria. (The General Strike in Nigeria is apparently over
with, but the action here is still continuing.) The main demand in
Nigeria appears to be to have the govt continue subsidizing gas
prices so that the 99% can afford to buy gas.
Other web sites besides Peacemovies.com will likely be participating
in this action. Most of them will be shutting down for just
one day, Wednesday January 18, 2012. If you own a web site,
please join them and me in protesting against this unjust
legislation. The White House has voiced opposition to the
current form of the legislation, but they have also said that
combating online piracy is an urgent problem that needs to be
addressed, so who knows what sort of compromises they will
ultimately make on this. We have to keep the pressure coming
from our side.
1-17-12 update:It is confirmed that Wikipedia.org and other web sites will be
participating in this action. I can't black out my site like they
do because my site host doesn't allow me to run scripts. But
here is the link to the strike page, which most people will be
using on Wednesday Jan 18, 2012: http://sopastrike.com/strike. You can also sign another
petition here: http://act.boldprogressives.org/survey/survey_sopa_reddit/?source=briefing. You can also pledge to not support
the re-election of representatives (like Barbara Boxer and Dianne
Feinstein) who support SOPA/PIPA . Go here to sign that petition:

My local Rep, Zoe Lofgren, has a bunch of articles on her web site
that you can use to become better informed about this
legislation. Her site is located here. People are urged to sign a petition urging
Wikipedia.org to go dark this week (the petition site says "next
week", but that actually refers to THIS week) Get to the petition by
going here.
Another more general petition to protest against SOPA can be signed
by going here.
Good luck, Happy New Year and Happy Surfing!
