Skeeter Phelan (Emma Stone) is a recent college grad trying to land
her first job as a writer in Jackson, Mississippi in 1963. She
decides to write an expose on what it is like to be a negro maid
working for white people. She enlists the help of a dozen maids to
tell her their stories. It is not easy to get the maids to
come forward and for awhile it seems that the book might not make it
into publication. There is one hilarious moment in the film
where the maid Minny Jackson (Octavia Spencer) bakes a just desert
for a woman who fired her. Four stars.
