Review for Winter's Bone
by  John Thielking

Winter's Bone R 1:40  Drama

A 17 year old girl (Jennifer Lawrence) is essentially in charge of caring for her family, including her sick mother, after her father apparently skipped bail. Because the family house and back woods were put up as collateral for the bond, the family faces eviction if the father does not show up in court.  The 17 year old sister goes looking for her father despite threats from the neighbors that she should leave it alone.

Although this movie is a traditional thriller/drama type movie there are only 10 mostly mild scenes of violence. In one scene the 17 year old is beaten and bloodied and in another scene the hands of a corpse are cut off with a chain saw (which is not portrayed too graphically).  The rest of the violence
is relatively tame, such as killing and skinning a squirrel or smashing the windshield of an empty truck with an axe.  Three stars.

The movie trailers that precede the movie are a mixed bag.  The trailer for the anti-war flick Restrepo is violent (hardly suitable for all audiences) as is the trailer for The American.   The new Joan Rivers movie and the movie Waiting for Superman are probably non violent, judging by the trailers.
