Mavis Gary (Charlize Theron) is a washed up, middle aged but still
good looking female writer of teen oriented stories that sit in the
Young Adult sections of local bookstores. The stories used to
be hot a couple of years ago, according to one clerk, but not
anymore. And "Oh yeah", says the clerk, "By the way, please
don't autograph the books because if they have writing in them we
can't send them back to the publisher." Such is life for poor
Ms. Mavis Gary. She has this ridiculous romantic notion of
stealing her happily married high school sweetheart away from his
wife, practically in front of his wife, with even his wife's
blessing to come visit. Utter nonsense of the same grade as
Crazy, Stupid Love of a few months ago, though without quite the
same dramatic flair. Two stars.
This movie ranks as nonviolent because it has only five violent
scenes in it. There is a story of a hate crime, there is a story of
a car wreck, a car bumps into a pole, there is a story of a beating
and there is a story of a boating accident.
The previews included: a somewhat violent (Star Wars themed)
commercial for Variety Charity, a nonviolent commercial for St Jude,
a violent preview for Republic of ?, somewhat violent previews for
Titanic 3D, The Vow, Wanderlust and The Lucky One and a nonviolent
preview for We Bought A Zoo.
